Zakup, transport i sprowadzanie dzieła sztuki uruchamiają równoległy obieg dokumentów, których formalna ranga potrafi momentami niemal całkowicie przykryć sam obiekt artystyczny. W jednym z przypadków, w oświadczeniu składanym w związku z importem pracy Damiena Hirsta, musiałem odpowiedzieć Urzędowi Celnemu na kuriozalne pytanie o to, do czego służy zakupiony obraz.

2A0 - series of paintings, acrylic on canvas, 2024
The series consists of six paintings depicting authentic documents connected with artUNBOXING: waybills, invoices, purchase confirmations, customs correspondence and declarations concerning the import of works by Jake Chapman, Banksy and Damien Hirst.
Bureaucracy has always been an unexpected yet recurring element of artUNBOXING. Purchasing, transporting and importing a work of art activates a parallel circulation of documents whose formal significance can, at times, almost completely obscure the artwork itself. In one case, while completing a customs declaration concerning the import of a work by Damien Hirst, I was required to explain what the purchased artwork was actually intended for. Filling out the form therefore became, somewhat involuntarily, an attempt to provide an official explanation of what art itself is actually for.
Each document was meticulously repainted by hand, letter by letter, onto a canvas measuring approximately 170 × 120 cm. The original A4 sheet is enlarged to 2A0, creating a surface thirty-two times larger. A document that would normally remain somewhere on the margins of an artwork becomes a monumental painting, while the administrative, logistical and financial infrastructure surrounding the circulation of art takes over the space usually reserved for the artwork itself.
The series formally refers back to my earlier 2A0 paintings, in which I used the same method to repaint my own portfolio, artist statement and gallery labels. In this sense, 2A0 functions as a kind of indoor gallery billboard, an oversized artist’s business card, CV or self-portrait constructed not from an image, but from the texts and documents that accompany the artist’s professional existence.
Works from the series were presented in 2024 as part of the exhibition “Treatise on artUNBOXING” at the State Gallery of Art in Sopot.
